Locations – International

We envision The Tao Experience as a U.S. and global phenomenon covering places that are integral to Tao’s life journey such as India, France and the U.K., and other places that are on her wish list like Argentina and Australia. Phases I and II are specifically focused on capturing footage for Tao’s documentary. Phase II offers additional unique experiences. Each trip would include reflection time for Tao and connection time with locals to make it truly special for all involved!

Proposed International Regions

Phase I:

  • India – Tao usually makes at least one trip to India every year, spending two to four weeks at a time, often leading a group of students. The 2014 trip was two weeks and covered 8 cities. This Tao Experience trip will be more deliberate in retracing her steps and filming from her perspective – possibly in two trips. Key places include Pondicherry (where she grew up – also the home of the great poet and sage, Sri Aurobindo); Gujarat (where Gandhi was born and led the 1930 Salt March – with stops particularly in Sabarmati to the Gandhi Ashram and Dandi as the last stop on the March); Bihar (where Tao’s mother was from); Darjeeling (where Tao accompanied her uncle when he fixed the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway or “Toy Train”); Kerala (the birthplace of Yoga and Ayurveda); Pune (home of Iyengar’s Institute); Kolkata (home base of Swami Vivekananda); Delhi (capital city where Gandhi was killed); Mumbai (for a dance showcase); Agra (for yoga at the Taj Mahal). Find out more about Tao’s yoga background.

  • Europe – Key countries include France, England, Austria, Scotland, Ireland and Switzerland. Tao’s family owned a vineyard in the Rhône Valley in France for generations. That’s where Tao helped her aunt hide Polish Jews in cement wine vats at the start of World War II. Tao even shared wine with Ernest Hemingway in Sancerre so a wine tasting in both places would be divine. In Paris, we can see how she helped Jews hiding in the caves under the city escape and then go to some of the famous couture houses where she modeled. Perhaps we’ll visit the famous Maxim’s Restaurant since Tao was a good friend of the owner, Louis Vaudable. Salzburg is where Tao trained over 2,000 American WACs (Women’s Auxiliary Corps) and she modeled for Jean Desses in St. Moritz. In London and on the White Cliffs of Dover, Tao can show us where she performed during the Nazi Bombing Blitz. Europe offers many unique opportunities – these are just a few. Find out more about Tao’s modeling, work in theatre/film and wine background.

Phase 2:

  • Israel / Dubai – Tao participated in Yoga for Peace in Israel in 1995 with 400 yogis from around the world including (then) 96-year-old Indra Devi and T.K.V. Desikachar. In appreciation for risking her life by helping Jews escape the Nazis during World War II, Tao was invited as the only non-Jewish actress to perform in Images of Israel at the end of the war. Tao has expressed interest in spending time in this Holy Land, most particularly Jerusalem and this would lead to searching for Holy Land tours from the likes of Immanuel-Tours to learn more about Jerusalem’s religions, however whether Tao visited again is unknown. Other areas could include the Tiberias area near the Sea of Galilee, Qunran and the Dead Sea area, as well as Eilat and Be’er Sheba. Another place in the Middle East region is Dubai – where Tao has received interest in her teachings. Find out more about Tao’s history of activism.

  • Argentina / Brazil – Tao started ballroom dancing at age 87, and has since won over 700 First Place Awards. Her dance partners are 70 years younger than her. One of Tao’s dreams is to dance the tango in Argentina. Therefore, Buenos Aires would be our first stop in South America to dance and taste Argentinean wine. From there onwards she would also like to embark on one of the iconic patagonia tours so that she could see the Andes Mountains, lakes, fjords, and glaciers in the west and the deserts to the east up close. Tao teaches a one-of-kind “Tango Yoga Flow” which she could demonstrate in a local event. We would also visit the Fundacion Indra Devi which promotes the teachings of Tao’s mentor Indra Devi. Another place in South America includes Rio and Bahia in Brazil where we can have a meet-and-greet with Tao and a Capoeira Master. Find out more about Tao’s love of dance.

  • Myanmar – Tao visited Burma (now Myanmar) when she was a child over 85 years ago. Her perspective on the changes would be priceless. We first would like to visit Rangoon (the old capital where Tao was) and then Bagan (home to over 2,000 temples and the world’s great archaeological sites). We would also visit Mandalay (the last royal capital of Burma) and perhaps Kalaw (focused on protecting the local ecology and elephants). Along the way, we would do yoga and set meet-and-greets with Tao and local leaders, including Buddhist and other spiritual leaders.

Phase 3:

  • Australia / New Zealand – Australia is Tao’s largest international market in terms of Advanced Sales for her new book, Dancing Light. The “land down under” offers Tao two things she loves – nature and wine. Tao can talk about the 171596-29-5 importance of nature and its connection to yoga as we visit some of the most beautiful places in the world such as the Great Barrier Reef, Kakadu National Park, Daintree National Park and the island of Tasmania. Key cities include Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide – one of the major wine producing regions of Australia. Other cities include Wellington and Auckland in New Zealand.

  • Japan / China / Singapore – Tao has expressed interest in visiting Japan, China and Singapore. Key cities include Kyoto, Nara and Tokyo in Japan, as well as Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong in China – and then on to Singapore. Tao’s uncle built the railroad from Hanoi to Yan’an in China and interest in yoga in Japan has been growing for several years. In all of these places, we would visit temples and top spiritual leaders.

Some may ask, “How can a 96-year-old travel to all these places?” Tao is used to extensive travel and would respond, “There is nothing you cannot do!” Since Tao’s uncle built some of the key railway systems in Asia and Africa and she traveled as a model, Tao was kris-crossing the globe before “global” travel was the norm. Tao now commonly travels using private airlines you can quite easily find online, such as this one for example, if you’d like to see it here. These sort of travel services can allow Tao to travel in luxury and comfort while moving all over the world. She has traveled throughout all continents except Antarctica and can provide invaluable wisdom and historical insights.
