98-year-old Yoga Master Tao Porchon-Lynch Shines Light in India – Part 3

June 21, 2017 – In 2014, the United Nations proclaimed the 21st of June as the International Day of Yoga to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of the practice. In 2016, Tao and I participated in the International Day of Yoga activities at the UN on “Yoga and the Sustainable Development Goals.” As a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader and Tao’s biographer, I was honored to moderate her conversation. Max Kennedy moderated the conversation with Sadhguru, and then Sadhguru and Tao took the stage together. This year, Tao is a key part of the festivities in Bangalore under the invitation of Shwaasa Guru Sri Vachananand Swamiji.

On the morning of the 21st, we gathered at the Shangri-La Hotel where we were all staying and journeyed over to the Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium where the Yoga Day events were going to be held. First, we spent time in the tented “green room” with the other dignitaries. Once again we were sitting with Pilot Baba, Yogamata Keiko Aikawa, Jagadananda Das, Amma V. Nanammal and others. There was a lot of excitement in the air as people started filling in the stadium and the Shwaasa team prepared. I was once again grateful to have Anuradha Prabhu and Nimma Seenu helping us for the day.

I was delighted to join Tao on stage with the other spiritual leaders. Shwaasa Guru led the crowd in a sequence of postures and his special meditation. There were 5,000 practitioners so we had quite a vantage point. There was a sea of yogis flowing together. The crowd was even more energized when 98-year-old Tao and 97-year-old Nanammal demonstrated a few yoga postures. It was incredible to see them both in Shoulder Stand. It confirmed that everything is possible and age is truly just a number!

Social activist Anna Hazare spoke and charged the crowd. He has led movements to promote rural development, increase government transparency, and investigate/punish corruption in public life, and is often compared to Mahatma Gandhi. He often organizes grassroots movements and frequently conducts hunger strikes to further his causes. To no surprise, he also practices yoga.

After he spoke, there was a special plant ceremony which Tao participated in and then the honors were given. I was delighted to receive a plaque and other items along with Tao. All in all, it was quite a day. When we left the stadium, we went to the TV9 studio for a live interview. I joined Tao on-air to field questions. The “Tao Effect” was in full force… she inspired everyone she met and even those over the air waves.
