98-year-old Yoga Master Tao Porchon-Lynch Shines Bright in India – Part 8

June 25 – 27, 2017 – After seven incredible days in Bangalore, 98-year-old yoga master Tao Porchon-Lynch and I flew to Mumbai to spend time with friends, and for Tao to dance and receive a surprise award.  We also did our popular Conversation with a Master talk at a local company. It was very well-received as always. I had been to Mumbai previously for a World Economic Forum event and was delighted to be back (see series I wrote for the Gates Foundation).

Our host in Mumbai was acclaimed dancer and choreographer Sandip Soparrkar. We stayed at his home and he was wonderfully gracious. There were a stream of dancers coming in and out to practice, and it was fun to witness the dance culture.  Tao was like a teenager talking with the others about moves, clothes and shoes. Tao and Sandip had performed together on numerous occasions, including one event with over 5,000 people. He had attended Tao’s birthday parties in New York (99th, 98th), and also hosted a grand Dancing Light book launch in Mumbai in 2015 with an impressive list of stars in attendance such as Alyque Padamsee, Sharbani Mukherji, Kamini Kaushal, Sadhya Shetty, Rohit Verma, Kaualjeet, Mithun Purandare, Amit Dolawat, Mayank Lalpuria, among others.

For this trip, without Tao knowing, Sandip had arranged for her to receive the World Book of Records Award for the World’s Oldest Ballroom Dancer.  He also hosted a party in her honor at the Junkyard Cafe which included the presentation of the award, showcase dances for Tao and a slew of media.  To top it off, Tao and Sandip wowed the audience by doing a dance together. The actress Sharbani Mukherj accompanied us and helped Sandip host. In a very charming gesture, superstar Jackie Shroff greeted Tao with a kiss on the hand and helped to present the award. The famous Bollywood actress, 90-year-old Kamini Kaushal, once again made an unusual public appearance for Tao.  They have known each other for other 50 years. Kumkum Somani, Kamini’s niece and another dear friend of Tao’s, was also there with other family members to celebrate. In addition, First Lady Amruta Fadnavis came out to say a few words and honor Tao.  Sandip did a fabulous job coordinating all of the details at short notice.

We went from the party, to dinner and then to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.  Tao didn’t miss a beat and was even recognized by airport security.  It was an extraordinary time in Mumbai.  Although it was raining for the entire time, Tao brought light to every person and event. That’s the Tao Effect! 🙂
