97-year-old Yoga Master Tao Porchon-Lynch and Mother-Daughter Writing Team in Chicago to Receive 2016 IPPY Award
DAY 1 DAY 2A DAY 2B DAY 3
May 10, 2016– 97-year-old yoga master Tao Porchon-Lynch can add another accolade to her name, “award-winning author,” demonstrating once again that it is never too late to realize your dreams. She graced the windy city of Chicago to receive a 2016 IPPY Award for her book, Dancing Light: The Spiritual Side of Being Through the Eyes of a Modern Yoga Master. It tied for a Silver Medal in the Autobiography/Memoir II (Coming of Age/Family Legacy/Travel) National Category for the 2016 Independent Publisher Book Awards. Read original press release. The ceremony took place on the 99th floor Skydeck of the Willis Tower. As a co-author I was honored to join Tao along with my mother, Columbia University-trained journalist Janie Sykes Kennedy. We came together as three generations of women to tell the story of one incredible woman.
The IPPY Awards were launched in 1996 and are conducted each year to honor the year’s best independently published books, offering an alternative to “the big five” conglomerated media publishers. Gold, silver and bronze IPPY medallions were awarded in 80 national, 22 regional, and ten e-book categories. This year’s contest drew nearly 5,000 entries, with winning medalists in 42 U.S. states plus DC, six Canadian provinces, and nine countries overseas. Below are some pictures from the evening.
